What happens if the reef isn't fixed
If the destruction of the reef continues to occur at the same rate disastrous events could begin to occur.
- The Great Barrier Reef is filled with thousands of animals and plants, and if the Great Barrier Reef is destroyed there habitat will be lost which means they will either have to adapt to a new habitat or their species may become extinct.
- The destruction of the Great Barrier Reef will also affect Australian tourism. Since the Great Barrier Reef is named as one of the Word's greatest sights and attracts many tourists each year producing an approximate income of 22.716 million dollars per year it is a great boost to Australia's economy. If the coral reefs become extinct, the money and jobs created from the reefs tourism will become extinct with it.
- Without the coral reefs, the balance of the entire oceanic ecosystem will be thrown off. It will change our relationship with the resources in the ocean. Just as our actions here, thousands of miles away, can cause harm to the coral reefs all the way in Australia, what happens to the corals over there can impact us as well.
- The Indigenous connection and the long and vast history Indigenous Australians and Torres Strait Islanders share with the reef will be destroyed forever. Therefore its destruction will take with it a part of some Indigenous culture.
